Soccer - The World Game
In years gone by, soccer in Australia was very much a sport enjoyed by the minority. With limited media exposure and a national team with very little success to boast, the sport was fighting an uphill battle to flourish against the more popular Australian Rules football and Rugby Union. This all changed, however, on one memorable night in 2005 at Sydney's stadium Australia. With Uruguay once again standing in the way of the Socceroos and history, Kewell, Viduka, Schwarzer, Cahill and co, led us to the promised land and into only our second FIFA World Cup and first since 1974.
What transpired at the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany will remain etched in the minds of Australian soccer and sports fan alike, nevermind the lucky fans who witnessed it first hand and turned stadiums around Deutchland into a sea of Green and Gold.
